I am a Senior Lecturer
in the Centre for Clinical Neurosciences at St Georges, University of London
and Consultant Neurologist in the Atkinson Morley Regional Neuroscience Centre,
St Georges Hospital, Tooting London SW17 0QT. I was previously a Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer ar the National Hospital
for Neurology, Queen Square,
London WC1N 3BG.
I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London), and member of the Association of British Neurologists, the Higher Education Academy, and the International League Against Epilepsy (British Section).
I joined the Epilepsy
Group at the National
Hospital for Neurology in
February 1999, and worked as a Consultant there from November 2000, prior to
taking up my current appointment in September 2003. The National Hospital Epilepsy Group runs one of the largest clinical
epilepsy services in the country. In addition to taking local referrals from
general practice, it is a tertiary referral centre for refractory and difficult
cases. My appointment to a tenured position at St Georges was part of a program
to drive forward epilepsy care and service provision for the South West London
Region, on a local and regional level. We now provide a complete service
including full diagnostic facilities (MRI, functional imaging, Electroencephalography
(EEG) and Video-EEG-telemetry), an active Neurosurgical Program,
Neuropsychology, Neurospychiatry, information provition, and an Epilepsy
Specialist Nurse. I also provide epilepsy expertise to the supraregional
tuberous sclerosis service based at St Georges.
In addition to my
clinical duties I run an active research team who moved with me to St Georges.
I have published numerous journal articles, reviews and book chapters on both
Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy, and am a regular speaker at conferences and
courses, both nationally and internationally. I am an elected member of the
executive committee of the European Neurological Society. I hold a postgraduate
qualification in education, and undertake regular teaching to doctors, undergraduate
and post-graduate students, and patients with Epilepsy.
I
have had regular involvement in clinical trials since the early 1990s,
including industry and academic sponsored projects, and have up to date
clinical trials good clinical practice training. I also have a medicolegal practice for cases where epilepsy/seizures are a main issue, and have experience in civil, family and criminal cases, including as a single joint expert. I also provide neurology advice to London Underground Occupational Health.
